Most of it is in the drawbars and how you play it. If it's Ray Manzarek you are going for, remember that the English model was on the first and second album, the Italian on Morrison Hotel, LA Woman and the In Concert Live stuff (Gloria, Universal Mind, Soul Kitchen, Celebration of the Lizard) and American on the PBS Critique show. You should be able to get extremely similar if not the same sounds from all models of Continentals. But I usually tend toward the wooden key models, but because of the feel. Since finding the basic 3 models I have had more than a few of each type. But it was eventually sorted and sounded great.

It did eventually develop the normal cold solder joint cracks in the main generator board routing PCB where the generator pins plug into the unit. This one had a great feeling Wooden keyboard and once the power supply was repaired it also sounded great. But the feel of the keys alone was worth the nearly constant upkeep on this English Continental.įlash forward again to finding one of my holy grails, the American Continental V301H. I also had more electronic issues with that particular English unit. While I will admit that I enjoyed playing the English model over the Italian, due to the wooden keys. This is what people consider THE proper sound of a Continental. I eventually, with the help of the Internet, found an English made V301J or TC. I played it for a few years in a doors tribute band with no complaints on sound or tone or mojo or Vibe or anything. I was extremely happy with the tone and sounds I was able to get from that machine. By that I mean I started my Vox collecting in 1995 with a V301E Italian Continental. I have played all three types for many years. But here is my opinion of the different models of the classic Vox Continental.
